Cyprus can be reunified, if Turkey’s president allows it

http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21715722-after-43-years-division-greek-and-turkish-cypriots-are-verge-deal-cyprus-can-be

.

Erdogan cannot afford to see Cyprus divided, I think. A divided Cyprus means a divided Turkey.
Peace in Cyprus, as a BBF, where there are choices for Citizens, both as Persons, and as Individuals, is a template for the Constitutional reform, I suggest, Turkey needs. If there is one Flag in Turkey, the Flag of Turkey, then it is the same in Cyprus.
It is not a question of "Greeks" vs "Turks", though, the Problem, is framed that way. It is an issue of Sovereignty. Cyprus exists, its People, Cypriots, exist, despite much effort over decades to deny them this Justice. Let us not forget them, those who, for the most part, were murdered, or who were made to disappear; although they were killed by "Greeks" and "Turks", they were, not "Greeks", or, not "Turks", they died for "being" Cypriot.
The USA comes to mind, and Canada, as two successful BBFs (Bizonal Bicommunal Federations) with one Flag under which there is no distinction or discrimination by its Citizenship, of its Citizenship, (except on merit), while diverse as Citizens, one in defending each other as Citizens.
...imagine, in the USA, it divided as is suggested by the wants of its minorities, so that they gain exclusivity to Democracy in a territory defined by force and occupation. Imagine a USA where, forces like the USA, other countries, may act without prejudice, in the USA. Imagine that Cypriots do not want to live this way.
Erdogan in an instant can solve the Cyprus Problem. The same Problem in a “new Turkey” can be solved, with Cyprus, an agreeable solution in Cyprus, as its template.
...dividing Cyprus is like asking Solomon to divide a living child; nothing good can come of it.
There are no "deals" on Universal Principals. Lest we Forget.
...if we (read: the rest of the world) betray Cyprus, if we ignore that Cypriots exist, if we allow "Turkishness" to gain this superiority above what is not "Turkish", we betray ourselves; it will not end there.
Turkey is "but one"; this can be true on many levels: also something to think about.

Cyprus matters: An open letter to the new U.N. secretary-general

http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/World/2017/Jan-16/389464-cyprus-matters-an-open-letter-to-the-new-un-secretary-general.ashx

.

...very much enjoyed reading this letter.

...i will add, that a Cyprus divided, is a Turkey divided.

Mr. Erdogan cannot escape the facts. If Cyprus is not "Greek", for the same reasons, Turkey is not "Turk", both represent an ethnos, a Citizenship which is Bicommunal, living as Individuals, and a life as Persons. One Turkey, One Cyprus, makes sense, it is not hard to understand, if within Turkey exist Turkish Constituencies.

Indeed the Problem, is Turkey's problem, her National issue, a BBF, Cyprus as its template is not anathema to Erdogan's goals in Turkey for Constitutional reform, though, looking at the USA and Canada, both BBFs, it is intentions that count.

...i ask all the readers to remember, that while in Cyprus "Greeks" and "Turks" exist, their victims for the most part, were not each other. Those who were murdered, or who were made to disappear, the other half as i like to call them, died as Cypriots, for "being" Cypriot. We should not forget, them; now especially would be a betrayal.

Greek Cypriots, have made their compromise, reform, from a Unitary state to that of a Federation: for Cyprus, as Cypriots. Turkish Cypriots may acknowledge such a step to join them; except for "but one", everyone agrees; yet...

There can be no "deal" on Universal Principals; Cyprus matters.

How Islamic will Erdogan’s presidential system be?

http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/12/turkey-islamic-erdogans-presidential-system-will-be.html

.

..the beauty of any Democracy, is change.

Democracies work because, they being based on Universal Principals, representing all people, can change, adapting to what changes occur, naturally.

For Turkey, in my opinion, one would expect a Constitutional reform that offers Turks one Turkey, where as Individuals they are united to defend each other and their State. And where as Persons they can nurture Turkey's distinct identities, as Constituencies; something like the solution to the Cyprus Problem, may surprise all Turkish People agreeably.

...a divided Cyprus, like a divided Turkey, do not seem attractive to me. Erdogan, with a change of intentions, in Cyprus, can demonstrate that as a Leader, the President he wants to be, for all Turks, a way for Turkey's esteem to shine.

Will Israel impose Cypriot model in West Bank?

.

"Cypriot model" is an unjust, and cynical misnomer.

...pardon me but this reeks of an Injustice about to happen; just ask the Cypriots who are Israel's friends and allies.

Just ask the plaintiffs, if they received satisfaction from their claims.

...call it the, "Turkish model", it would be a more accurate description, in my opinion.

The final nail in the coffin of peace process in Turkey

http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/11/turkey-mardin-mayor-ahmet-turk-detained.html

.

"Before a ditch became a grave for Hasan Hayri, Ataturk began to glorify the Turkish race and declared one Turk equal to the world."

...the first betrayal, for "Turkishness". Ataturk must feel shame, what with the Kemalists, and Erdogan, "better" than him.

Turkey’s Free Press Withers Under Erdogan’s Crackdown

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/cyprus45312-60.html#p851999

.

...accordingly, this Press Freedom, advanced, it is returning to its state before there was an Erdogan.

Affectively, (and effectively,) the "New Turkey", is an effort to move, more, backwards.

Re: Is it over for Turkey?

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/cyprus35837-70.html#p851465

.

"Turkey", that is to say Erdogan's Turkey, is only on the train, he has a destination (and his intention is at some point to get off that train).

...Zero friends with neighbours can change quickly, it takes a single thought. One hopes, without the escalation of arms that this is possible. Erdogan is a hero, if he wants to be, bigger than Kemal himself; it is not "Turkishness" but Turkey that is great, its people (and its People,) and the diversity of its form. While his intention is to lead a Nation, he leads a State, and there is a big difference, (the Problem) which he must realise.

Cyprus, is, the template, (as a BBF). But, it is a Template which is not his to control. What results in Cyprus' (re)unification, if it is the "perfect" solution, will have as a result reform to the Turkish Republic's Constitution as well.

Europe's interest is in Cyprus, though small, it is, now, the (read: their) fulcrum which balances their security against the forces that seek to rival the significance of its Union (ie Erdogan's ambition, forces like Daesh in the EMed), to the world. A Cyprus divided, is a Turkey divided for the same reasons, and a Europe more divided, against and within themselves, between Solidarity toward a Universal Principal and, an extreme multi-faceted element (which thrives on the fear they have within themselves). Cypriots recognised as Cypriots is essential, as it is in Turkey, (that Turks are not necessarily "Turks",) more than a Nation, a State with Nations, a state where Individuals defend each other Freely, without distinction or discrimination, and there is Liberty, (as Persons) respect and recognition for all. Likely, Cyprus divided may be the tribute Erdogan is still looking for, a National priority of "Turks" since the Treaty of Lausanne, a dogma, a step toward a larger prize, in a war of Civilizations as the "Protector" of a Caliphate, what is his Religion, he dreams one day will have a center, like the Vatican to the Occidental World, its equal in Istanbul. Cyprus can be a way forward for another kind of Turkey, which includes something more than this perspective, not in a perpetual conflict as though Peace is not normal, alternatively; Erdogan's choice. Cyprus as an ally, Cyprus as an ally in a wider sphere, despite his most deep-seated dreams, must seem very attractive to him sometimes as well. A BBF, may be Turkey's solution soon, mini America, to rival America (a BBF), a force that rivals Europe already, which is in itself a BBF, something to think about, Rights for Individuals and Freedom, Liberty as Persons, self-representation that sustains these distinct identities if not helping them to thrive.

...indeed, while on the train, he may learn enough to take that train himself, further. (And put away the idea of getting somewhere, where he can see the train wrecked).
