..the beauty of any Democracy, is change.
Democracies work because, they being based on Universal Principals, representing all people, can change, adapting to what changes occur, naturally.
For Turkey, in my opinion, one would expect a Constitutional reform that offers Turks one Turkey, where as Individuals they are united to defend each other and their State. And where as Persons they can nurture Turkey's distinct identities, as Constituencies; something like the solution to the Cyprus Problem, may surprise all Turkish People agreeably.
...a divided Cyprus, like a divided Turkey, do not seem attractive to me. Erdogan, with a change of intentions, in Cyprus, can demonstrate that as a Leader, the President he wants to be, for all Turks, a way for Turkey's esteem to shine.

Will Israel impose Cypriot model in West Bank?
http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/12/israel-settlements-west-bank-cypriot-model.html
.
"Cypriot model" is an unjust, and cynical misnomer.
...pardon me but this reeks of an Injustice about to happen; just ask the Cypriots who are Israel's friends and allies.
Just ask the plaintiffs, if they received satisfaction from their claims.
...call it the, "Turkish model", it would be a more accurate description, in my opinion.

Re: Is it over for Turkey?

"Turkey", that is to say Erdogan's Turkey, is only on the train, he has a destination (and his intention is at some point to get off that train).
...Zero friends with neighbours can change quickly, it takes a single thought. One hopes, without the escalation of arms that this is possible. Erdogan is a hero, if he wants to be, bigger than Kemal himself; it is not "Turkishness" but Turkey that is great, its people (and its People,) and the diversity of its form. While his intention is to lead a Nation, he leads a State, and there is a big difference, (the Problem) which he must realise.
Cyprus, is, the template, (as a BBF). But, it is a Template which is not his to control. What results in Cyprus' (re)unification, if it is the "perfect" solution, will have as a result reform to the Turkish Republic's Constitution as well.
Europe's interest is in Cyprus, though small, it is, now, the (read: their) fulcrum which balances their security against the forces that seek to rival the significance of its Union (ie Erdogan's ambition, forces like Daesh in the EMed), to the world. A Cyprus divided, is a Turkey divided for the same reasons, and a Europe more divided, against and within themselves, between Solidarity toward a Universal Principal and, an extreme multi-faceted element (which thrives on the fear they have within themselves). Cypriots recognised as Cypriots is essential, as it is in Turkey, (that Turks are not necessarily "Turks",) more than a Nation, a State with Nations, a state where Individuals defend each other Freely, without distinction or discrimination, and there is Liberty, (as Persons) respect and recognition for all. Likely, Cyprus divided may be the tribute Erdogan is still looking for, a National priority of "Turks" since the Treaty of Lausanne, a dogma, a step toward a larger prize, in a war of Civilizations as the "Protector" of a Caliphate, what is his Religion, he dreams one day will have a center, like the Vatican to the Occidental World, its equal in Istanbul. Cyprus can be a way forward for another kind of Turkey, which includes something more than this perspective, not in a perpetual conflict as though Peace is not normal, alternatively; Erdogan's choice. Cyprus as an ally, Cyprus as an ally in a wider sphere, despite his most deep-seated dreams, must seem very attractive to him sometimes as well. A BBF, may be Turkey's solution soon, mini America, to rival America (a BBF), a force that rivals Europe already, which is in itself a BBF, something to think about, Rights for Individuals and Freedom, Liberty as Persons, self-representation that sustains these distinct identities if not helping them to thrive.
...indeed, while on the train, he may learn enough to take that train himself, further. (And put away the idea of getting somewhere, where he can see the train wrecked).

Re: Turkish Franchises eagerly awaiting a United Cyprus!
http://www.cyprus-forum.com/cyprus45214-10.html#p850938
.
...indeed, it looks bad for those not "Turkish" living north of the "Green Line". "Turks" may celebrate their dependence on Turkey, or to be more accurate, they appreciate the personal wealth that results from such an effort.
But, with a small change of intention, and all of it becomes a gift, to Cypriots, reparations, recognition and respect, much to the esteem of Turkey's international partners; don't forget, to Erdogan you are servant-slaves.
The issue is not so black and white...
...or, in effect it is very clear; what exists is a Republic of Cyprus, a Greek Constituency may exist, and it may someday seek the same kind of self-representation as a Turkish Constituency is seeking today, yet, it, the Republic in any case represents Cypriots, it demonstrates their commitment toward the Universal Principals which define equality among all people without discrimination or distinction, whether the representation as Persons is a Liberty, in Cyprus, or not.
Mustiejodu, i suggest that Turkish Cypriots, like Greek Cypriots have the same worry, those who are Cypriot must at this moment decide what it is that they want. Things will change, they cannot stay the same being unnatural, and there is a huge potential to be unleashed if as Cypriots, Cypriots are willing to defend each other as Cypriots. There is the opportunity, in representing a Cypriot cause, to satisfy in Turkey, and in other conflicts that are ethnically charged not unlike Cyprus, the criteria where they too may see the good in good intentions, as a BBF. Thus, a "Turkish Franchise" may exist to serve that specific population, (like a "Greek" Charter, or a "Maronite" Charter, if such Cypriot Constituencies were founded). Some (Turkish Cypriot Franchises) may find that they meet the criteria of a Cypriot one, others will adapt to greet a wider market. Each authority would have its own credibility, in any case. Nothing should prevent success, from merit.
(Beyond "this", is also a choice.)
Personally speaking, when you criticize (all) Cypriots (not "Turkish") as "Greeks", i feel insulted. I am not a "Greek". I know that "Greeks" and "Turks" are the same, and i know that i am among the other half, represent them as you will, they, are Cypriots.
...I feel you, (and "you",) forget sometimes the difference.
I'll add, there is no "Greek" way and there is no "Turkish" way, they are not mutually exclusive; there is, a Cypriot way.

Turkey could carry out ground operations against PKK in Iraq

...right, as soon as a "no fly zone" is established.
I remember why such an effort (by the rest of the world,) was rejected in the first place. Nothing has changed. Iran, Iraq, and Syria, may recognise soon, what Cypriots have had to endure in real terms for decades: occupation troops in the guise of the Turkish Army as peacekeepers.
It is no coincidence that Erdogan chooses to rail about the Treaty of Lausanne at such a moment. Whereas dividing Cyprus would be a tribute to "Turkishness", in the grander scheme of things there is still the prize of a greater Turkey, and him, the protector of this wider sphere.

Turkey never got over the Treaty of Lausanne, the world stopped for them when that began, where they have tried to recover ever since. Cyprus is a casualty in this war, with what is attainable, even as a tribute, for being wronged.
...Cyprus, like Cypriots, "do not exist", in affect; explains a lot, doesn't it?
Greeks, don't need Greece to live over the whole globe. Cyprus may be Greek by its demographics, but Cypriots are Cypriots. Cypriots are not "Greek", neither "Turkish", these extremes betray this goal, as Citizens of the World.

We are all counterinsurgents now
http://www.politico.eu/article/we-are-all-counterinsurgents-now-isil-jihad-nice-attack/
make a friend, makes ten friends; make an enemy makes ten enemies.
Indeed, balance is needed.
...Lest we Forget; i recall the real enemy, not each other, but Ignorance, Hunger, and Disease.
Thank-you Mr. Brammer, great article; Canada comes to mind, with its Sponsorship Program, where despite the Government Policy, or parallel to it, individuals themselves can take (and took) responsibility, to welcome those in the greatest need of some respect and recognition one on one. My wish, in Europe, and in the USA, that this possibility could exist, that a German, or a Texan would find it in their heart to support one family, or one person, themselves, it would not surprise me that in this way thousands would find shelter, regardless.
...to those who fear Muslims, i say, fear God, that one God and the same. Overcome your own fear or you fail yourself, by ignoring the infinite power of Love in any case , without Grace.
The way is not Christian, it is a Golden Rule.
...Act accordingly, it is not hard to understand if there is an "Us", and a "Them".

Cypriot flag couple feel abandoned by Anastasiades
http://cyprus-mail.com/2016/03/26/turkish-cypriot-flag-couple-feel-abandoned-by-anastasiades/
.
...there is no shame in having a mother-tongue, nor to recognise and respect the fact that for the most part, people are Grecophones, and that Turcophones, as Persons, have the same needs in sustaining a distinct identity (so too Maronites speaking Arabic), in Cyprus; we all speak English.
...a Cypriot identity, in my mind, welcomes diversity, the greater choices, and opportunities, that it brings. Cyprus is a cross-road to three Continents, Cypriots have excelled throughout their History as facilitators of exchange, let's not forget; indeed there is, The bicommunal Technical Committee on Education, started recently, tasked by Mr. Akinci, and Mr. Anastasiades, to find ways that the educational system can become more effective in transforming the fears which divide Cypriots, into identifiable enemies, if you will, like xenophobia, racism, 'ethnicism', extremism, and/or discrimination.
...it would be a good thing for a student to pick a "mother-tongue" from a list and learn it well; everyone in Cyprus should have the opportunity to learn English well, (and other languages,) as well. Beyond that, in my Cyprus, i would hope that our Institutions can accept the challenge that they themselves can continue to grow in aptitude, with a growing number of Official Languages.

The Official Erdogan the Clown Thread

Erdogan is a survivor, if he can't get off at his intended station, he will take the train he calls Democracy further.
It would not surprise me that this man will unify Cyprus, and in the process unify Turkey.
...can you imagine the photograph; Cameron laughing, shocked actually, watching Tsipras, Erdogan, and Anastasiades, embracing with hugs and kisses, while Eide and Akinci stand beside each other, wise smiles i'd say, their hands clasped together in front of them, calmly and with the humility you will find great Statesmen display on such occasions. Freedom for Cyprus, at last.
He has the capacity to make a "New Turkey", but his intentions must change if it is the world from which he seeks esteem.
...a good clown provides us with an insight into ourselves; I'm still rooting for Providence which works in ways that are (to me) so strange.
